Introduction:

The story ‘Princess September’ revolves around Princess September and a parrot. Like each of her eight sisters, she receives a parrot as a gift on her father’s birthday. Soon her parrot dies, and a singing bird takes its place. But her jealous sisters are not happy. The princess must now prove how much she really loves the bird. In the story the author brings out the themes of friendship and freedom. The author has reflected the friendship between the Princess and the bird with utmost care. Both show their love in their individual ways. The princess lets the bird free even though she wanted it for herself. And the little bird continued to visit the princess and sang her songs from faraway lands. The other theme of freedom is continued in the end of the story. The truth about freedom is expressed by the use of symbols of wings, wide blue sky and green rice growing in the fields. When denied of freedom, the little bird almost dies.  The very idea is symbolized by the use of the golden cage. Although the cage is made of gold, it has no value against freedom. Thus the author has conveyed that true melody or any other work of art can be done only in the state of freedom. And that is the real secret behind happiness.
