FOOD CHAINS AND FOOD WEB:

FOOD CHAINS

  • The food (or energy) can be transferred from one organism to the other through food chains.
  • This transfer of food energy from the source in plants through a series of organism with repeated eating and being eaten is known as a food chain.
  • The starting point of a food chain is a category of organisms called producers and the ending point of a food chain is a category of organisms called top carnivores.

  FOOD WEB

  • Food Web is the inter-connected food chains operation in an ecosystem which establishes a network of relationships between various species. It consists of many food chains.
  • The network of a large number of food chains existing in an ecosystem is called a food web.

  TROPHIC LEVELS

  • The various steps in a food chain at which the transfer or flow of food (or energy) takes place are called trophic levels.
