  • It scientifically refers to a state, where one has a safe and satisfying sex life and has a healthy capability to reproduce.
  • It involves a life cycle approach of both women and men that affect them from infancy to old age.
  • Reproductive health is not merely counseling and care related to reproduction and sexually transmitted diseases.
  • It deals with the reproductive processes, functions, and systems at all stages of life and includes sexual health, the purpose of which is the enhancement of life and personal relations.

There are three essential components of sexual and reproductive health care

  • Family planning – According to Reproline “Family planning benefits the health and well-being of women and families throughout the world. Using contraception could help to avoid unwanted pregnancies and space births; protect against STDs, including HIV/AIDS; and provide other health benefits.”

  • Sexual health –In order to have a good sexual health, a positive and respectful approach to sexuality and sexual relationships is a must. This means having safe and pleasurable sexual experiences which are free of coercion, discrimination or violence.

  • Maternal health –It refers to the health of women during pregnancy, childbirth, and the postpartum period.

Accurate information about sexual life, reproduction, contraception methods is essential and  helps to maintain a safe sexual and reproductive health. People could only protect themselves from sexually transmitted infections and diseases through awareness and empowerement about the same.

Women should be aware of when they would be fit for pregnancy and must have access to proper medical services when they are pregnant. They should have a safe delivery and deliver a healthy baby.
